The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
